Press Release:
Seabreeze United Church, 501 North Wild Olive Ave., Daytona Beach, FL will host an open house in celebration of the restoration and preservation of it's historical stained glass windows. The open house will be held, Friday, May 6, 2011 from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. There will be guided tours of the church to see 27 stained glass windows and learn the history of them. Another tour is planned for the Biblical Garden which is situated in the Cloisters. Refreshments will be served. A PowerPoint presentation relating the history of the founding of the church, which was established in 1904 called, "The Tourist Church", will be shown in fellowship hall. Children's activities will also be in Fellowship Hall. There is no charge.
Seabreeze Church applied and received a Volusia County ECHO, Environmental, Cultural, Historical, and Outdoor Grant in 2009, qualifying under Historical. Some of the windows needed to be releaded, but few were broken. Bovard Studios, specializing in stained glass windows for churches, removed the windows and refitted each one. The ones needing repair were transported to the Bovard Studio. The work was completed in late 2010. Then the final permanent ECHO plaque was ordered and put into place. One of the goals stated in the grant application was to have an open house tour for the public.
Seabreeze Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The three main buildings are constructed of solidified marl rock, called "bog rock" mined on a ridge west of Daytona Beach. The marl is thousands of years old and contains a few ancient shells, but no coquina shells. The architectural style is Spanish Mission.
